In the footsteps of Constant Permeke

This Belgian painter and sculptor is considered to be one of the foremost Flemish expressionist artists. He lived in Jabbeke for twenty years and drew inspiration from the picturesque landscape, the jovial locals and the way both connected in daily life.

His influence on Jabbeke can still be felt today. A number of his works can be admired in the Permeke Museum, and various walking and cycling routes are linked to his life in the region. Constant Permeke’s grave can be found in the cemetery next to the church of Jabbeke.

Constant Permeke is best known for his expressive, daring style. Having moved to West Flanders, he started painting with thick brushstrokes, clear lines and earthy tones to express a sense of solidity and strength in his art.

He witnessed this strength every day in the unremitting labour performed by the villagers in rural Jabbeke. In his paintings, he often depicted extensive fields, the sea and humble cottages.
